Last week, we reviewed the Polar H7 Bluetooth Low Energy heart rate monitor strap. This is a followup to that review. The review can be found here.

We have had many readers want more information on the Polar H7 Bluetooth Low Energy heart rate monitor strap. One of the biggest questions that readers have is, “Which iPhone apps work with the Polar H7?” So we set out to check all of the most popular apps that are out there. On the iPhone 4s, 5 and 5s, the apps that we test most often are:

  • RunKeeper
  • WahooFitness
  • MapMyRun
  • MapMyRun+
  • EndoMondo
  • Endomondo Pro
  • iSmoothRun
  • MapMyRide
  • MapMyRide+
  • runtastic
  • runtastic Pro
  • Runmeter
  • Jog Log
  • LogYourRun
  • HRV+
  • Strava
  • RunKeeper
  • micoach

So,…….the answer is………..all of the ones listed above.  Garmin Fit requires additional hardware.

Here are images of all of the apps that work with the Polar H7. You can see the heart rate displayed on the screen for each app:

RunKeeper and WahooFitness

MapMyRun and MapMyRun+

Endomondo and Endomondo Pro

MapMyRide and MapMyRide+

runtastic and Runmeter

Jog Log and LogYourRun

HRVPLUS

iSmoothRun and HRV+

StravaRunKeeper

Strava and RunKeeper

micoach2

micoach

So the bottom line – I was pretty amazed that I could get all of these apps to work with the Polar H7.

If you have any other apps that you want us to try, just leave us a comment, or send us an email and we’ll check ’em out.

Happy Training!

  12. Hi there! I have a question. First time you paired your HR monitor did you pair through iPhone’s bluetooth thingy? Or directly through the App?I haven’t been able to pair mine. Can’t actually figure out what’s wrong with mine. Thanks!

  15. Hi!
    I have two burning questions:
    1) Is it possible to pair H7 with iPhone 4S (via BT) and polar wristwatch (e.g. rs300x via 5kHz connection) simultaneously?
    2) Is H7 working with the newest adidas micoach app (which supports low energy bluetooth HRM)?

    Best regards
    Maciej

  16. Hi John,

When the polar H7 is used with iphone 5, say with map my run app, other than transmitting the HR data to the app, does the app actually use this data in calculuting energy burned?

Also, have you seen Polar Beat for the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 (http://polar.fi/beat/)? If so, I was wondering the same thing, does this app factor in HR in its forumla for energy burned in a workout?

Many thanks for your expertise and reviews – so useful 🙂

  19. Hi
I really need some help with the whole HRV thing.
Does the polar H7 work with the new iPhone 5 and is it comparable to use ithlete and bioforce apps? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

    • Damonstrat,

The Polar H7 does work with the iPhone 5. I am not sure if it works with athlete. Here is what I found on the ithlete webpage:

Here at ithlete we recommend using the Cardiosport heart rate monitor chest strap, available from the products page, in order to ensure the best quality reading and an accurate HRV measurement. Although you can use your existing chest strap monitor who wants to search for and put on a sweaty strap in the morning? No, we prefer to keep a Cardiosport strap next to the bed specially for ithlete measurements.

However if you do want to use your existing chest strap monitor, the ithlete ECG receiver is compatible with most makes and models which work with gym cardio equipment. Some tried and tested models proven to work include…

      Polar T31, T34, T61
      Polar T31 coded (incl Wearlink)
      Suunto Dual
      Nike analog chest transmitter belt
      Sigma Sport non coded
      Oregon Scientific analog
      Decathlon Geonaute HRM Chest belt
… tested other models? – Please let us know so we can add them to the list!

Many users contact us to ask whether the ithlete ECG receiver is compatible with Garmin ANT+ chest straps; unfortunately not at the present time. The Polar analog transmission standard has been proven in research to provide readings accurate enough to measure your heart rate variability. It is with this in mind the ithlete ECG receiver was designed to use this standard.

Here is what I found on the Bioforce webpage:

To use BioForce HRV, you will need a device that runs the app, the wireless receiver, and a Polar (all models except WIND) or other analogue compatible wireless heart rate transmitter belt. If you already have a heart rate transmitter belt, make sure that it sends an analogue signal and is not coded like the Polar WIND models. Just about transmitter that is read by Life Fitness or other standard cardio equipment will work. The BioForce HRV app runs on the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and any Android based device. Please note, the app does not run on PC or Mac desktop or notebook computers.

It doesn’t look like it works with either, but you should email them to make sure.

      John

      • Yes an Polar H7 or H6 will work on iThlete and I would assume bioforce since it is basically the same code… I have tested it iThlete myself with H7. I also built a great HRV App called hrvplus. http://www.hrvplus.com. Mine works with anything iPhone 4S or greater.

        • So, with the purchase of an H7, all anyone would need is to use your app or the Bioforce or Ithlete app and would have a functioning product?

          • Greg,

Yes, all you need is an app that works with the H7, which is typically free, or cost a few dollars, and you can be off and running. The phone has a built in GPS, which is used to track your workout. Many of the apps allow you to upload and review your workouts in a web browser. If you aren’t happy with an app, you can always switch to another. Many apps have a free and paid version, so you can try it out and see if you like it before committing more money for advanced features.

            John

  20. I was recently diagnosed with heart failure and I’m using an h7 to assist with my rehab / training. I’d like to get back to practicing martial arts, but I need an app that will notify me if my H.R. spikes above my max target. Anybody know of an iphone app with this ability?

So far the h7 has been a great purchase.

  21. Hi John,
I restart my training since 1 month and i use the polar beat app. I would like trying another app. Which app should i try? Thanks for your answer

    Alexandra

  22. Hi I use the Nike + running app on iPhone 4S could you try that please?

    Thanks. Leigh

  23. It also works with the Digfit app, which is what I use.

  24. Hi- this question was asked by someone else earlier, but it appears unanswered. Does the Polar H7 work with Strava apps?

  25. You are geniuses. Just the information I was seeking.Thank you very much 🙂

  26. […] iPhone Apps That Work With the Polar H7 Bluetooth Smart Heart Rate Monitor […]

  27. Hey, i dont suppose you’ve tried this with the Nike+ iphone GPS app?

  28. What about interfacing with the pear sports app? Looks like this app has some nice free features like preprogrammed runs and workouts that target zones for fat or fitness depending on user needs. It’s says they use the ant technology so based on what I see here h7 won’t work with ant apps correct?

Any recc apps that will guide my training as I mentioned above?

  29. I would love it if you could add HRVPlus, hrvplus.com to your list of supported apps. Thanks

  30. Does anyone know if the Polar H7 works with Strava iphone app?

  31. Does anyone know if the Polar H7 works with iPhone 5 on micoach?
    Thanks

  32. Ok have a unique question . Can’t get the H7 to connect to my map my ride+ app? I was able to connect to map my ride on my wife’s phone but can’t to my + version ? It will stay connecting but never does. I tried to restart my phone but no luck. I thought of deleting and reinstalling but it’s not free anymore.
We both use iphone 5’s BTW

  33. Can you use it with multiple apps @ a time? I tried Endomondo and Runtastic. and my calories burned were almost double on Runtastic. The runtastic app was close to my elliptical which is want I used it for. So I’m going with runtastic.

  34. Hello all!
Does anybody test If Polar H7 HRM works with Garmin Vivafit model?
    Thanks!

  35. I,m thinking about purchasing this heartrate monitor but am wondering if it’s compatable with the iphone 5S?

  36. I can’t get my Polar H7 to connect with Endomondo, or any other app listed above, for that matter. It works fine with my watch, so it’s definitely sending out the right signal.

  37. The hardware works fine but I need to send the actual data that makes up the heartrate vs time picture. In order to do detailed analysis of heart performance pictures are useless. Data, that is numbers, are required. Any help from anybody would be appreciated.

  38. Hi! Do you know if it work with the Run on Earth app?

  39. I’ve just released a new app that works with the polar H7 and H6.

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/motifit-visual-heart-rate/id942494517?mt=8&uo=4

    Hope you enjoy it :-).

  40. does it work with nike+ running app? Thx in advance

  41. Hi,

So would these apps also support the polar stride sensor foot pod since this is also a BLE device? And if they would then can they support both the polar H7 and this foot pod simultaneously? This would be very useful for tracking indoor runs on a treadmill.

  42. I am using a new application for heart run Bluetooth devices Heart Run. The discovery device is very simple and you can record your heart rate during and it in your iPhone devices. It’s aldo compatible with ios8 widget.

  43. I’ve purchased the Polar H7 but am unable to find an Android app that has what I’m looking for. I’m looking for:
    – Track real-time the heart rate (also when not exercising), with graphs of the heart rate over time
    – Heart rate variablity, if possible also with exercises to train this
    – Store the history of data
