Today we are continuing on our  journey to learn more about heart rate monitors, and the best way to choose the right one. Today we review two new heart rate monitor straps; the Sports Tracker Bluetooth SMART Heart Rate Monitor, and the Sports Tracker Heart Rate Monitor 2.

ST1The Sports Tracker Heart Rate Monitor SMART and the Sports Tracker Heart Rate Monitor 2 are two new heart rate monitors from Sports Tracker. The Sports Tracker Heart Rate Monitor SMART is one of the newest generation of heart rate monitors that work with the Bluetooth SMART (low energy Bluetooth 4.0) protocol. The Sports Tracker Heart Rate Monitor SMART works with the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 5. The Sports Tracker Heart Rate Monitor 2 supports iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 as well as Android, Nokia Symbian and Nokia N9. No extra dongles are required for this model.

So how do you know which Sports Tracker heart rate monitor model you need?  Let’s start with your phone. If you have an Android, Nokia Symbian, or Nokia N9, the Sports Tracker Heart Rate Monitor 2 is the one to get. If you have an iPhone, you have two choices, so keep reading.

Now that you have identified your iPhone model, you can determine which Sports Tracker HRM strap you need. If you own an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4, the Sports Tracker HRM Monitor 2 is the one you want. If you are an iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 owner, either HRM strap will work with your iPhone, but my recommendation is to get the Sports Tracker Bluetooth SMART HRM strap. This is mainly due to battery life. The Sports Tracker SMART HRM strap battery life is much better. It is typically 1 to 1.5 years, whereas the Sports Tracker HRM Monitor 2 battery lasts approximately 40 hours. The Sports Tracker HRM Monitor 2 battery is rechargeable, but if you forget to charge it before your workout, you may miss out. You shouldn’t have this problem with the HRM SMART strap. Still, it’s a matter of preference, and some people would rather have a rechargeable battery. On the flip side, the reason to choose the HRM Monitor 2 is that it works with more phones, and if you are thinking of switching between iPhone and Android, you may want to choose the HRM Monitor 2.

So now that you know which HRM strap works with your phone, it time to get on with the review.

Using the Sports Tracker Bluetooth SMART Heart Rate Monitor

We tested the Heart Rate Monitor SMART with an iPhone 5, with iOS 6.0.1. We also tested it with an iPad 3 with the Retina display. The apps we used were the Sports Tracker app on the iPhone, and Spinning from Digifit. As in all tests, we wear the heart rate monitor strap for an extended period of time to make sure it is comfortable, and we didn’t have any issues. Both HRM straps were very comfortable, and we had no comfort or connection issues in the extended wear test.

Using the Sports Tracker Heart Rate Monitor 2

We tested the Heart Rate Monitor SMART with an iPhone 5, with iOS 6.0.1. The apps we used were the Sports Tracker app on the iPhone, and Spinning from Digifit. As we did with the SMART heart rate monitor strap, we wore the heart rate monitor strap for an extended period of time to make sure it was comfortable. There were no connection issues at  all with this HRM strap.

Thoughts, Opinions and Summary:

Sports Tracker has done a great job with their new Bluetooth 2 and SMART heart rate monitor straps. The straps are comfortable, and the connections are solid. Pairing is easy, The cost of the Sports Tracker Bluetooth SMART is similar to competing heart rate monitor straps, while the cost of the Sports Tracker Heart Rate Monitor 2 is about $10.00 more than competing heart rate monitor straps. Claimed battery life is better for the BLE heart rate straps than the standard Bluetooth HRM’s, but we have not verified the battery life of the Sports Tracker Bluetooth SMART.

Pros:

  • Solid connection
  • The strap was soft and comfortable
  • Claimed battery life is excellent for the Sports Tracker Bluetooth SMART HRM. Claimed battery life is only 40 hours on the Sports Tracker HRM 2, but the battery is rechargeable with the supplied charger

Cons:

  • The Sports Tracker Heart Rate Monitor 2 is about $10.00 more than competing heart rate monitor straps
So, as usual, we always ask ourselves if we would recommend the Sports Tracker Bluetooth 2 and Sports Tracker SMART  heart rate monitor straps, and whether we would spend our hard earned money on these products. The answer is yes –  we highly recommend these products. So if you want to train using your phone, grab one of these straps and hit the road.
As always,
Happy training!

  1. It appears this won’t pair with other apps besides the Sports Tracker app (and Spinning) unless I misread your review. I would imagine for folks like me that use other apps this could be a significant “Con”?

    Love your reviews! Great work!

    • Adam,

The Sports Tracker heart rate monitor SMART will work with any app that works with Bluetooth SMART heart rate monitors. I just finished using the Sports Tracker HRM SMART with Endomondo PRO. There are many apps out there, and almost any of the newer iPhone apps works with the SMART technology.

      I hope this helps.

      • Wonderful! I had misunderstood which apps it would work with and I really appreciate the update, John. It most definitely helps. Great work as always!

  2. I use Sports Tracker for my Samsung Galaxy 3 and its awesome. I dont have to worry about keeping the page or phone lit just so the app can work. I can listen to music and walk or run for miles and whether the phone is lit or not it still records. Thank you!

  3. Does the Sports Tracker Heart Rate Monitor 2 (Non SMART Version) also work with other Apps besides the Sports Tracker app?

  4. Does it have memory, or does it have to be connected all the time? Thanks.
