I hope everyone had a great Easter. We took some time off, and enjoyed time with the family. All of us have been recuperating this week. Katie and James have foot and leg injuries and are trying to get healthy for the Flying Pig marathon. I’ve been sick this week and spent the weekend walking the trails until I feel good enough to run. Hopefully, next week will be a better week for training.
Here’s what’s happening in the world of fitness this week:
There seems to be a few big announcements this week. If you saw our Monday post, it looks like Nike is getting out of the hardware business. I assume this includes the Nike FuelBand and the Nike+ Sportswatch. Just when so many companies are jumping into the fitness monitoring space, and with rumors of Apple getting into fitness, Nike decides to bail. I can only assume that they are not making money in the space, and it’s a lot more work than it’s worth.
If you are going to order the Garmin Vivofit, they are still on backorder by approximately 3-5 weeks. The backorder has remained this way over the last month, so it you want one for this spring, you should order one now.
Garmin recently announced the new Edge 1000 bike computer .It retails for $599.99 and ships in the second quarter. You can pre-order it on the Garmin website. We hope to have a review soon.
The weather in southwestern Ohio has been beautiful the last few weeks, and commuting to work is in full swing. I commute daily to work on a Gary Fisher Mendota that I bought a few years back:
I put fenders and a rear rack on the bike, and have been using it daily. My commute is 7 miles each way, with some pretty good hills both ways. I also ride home for lunch to get in a little more exercise. When it gets really warm, I get pretty sweaty riding the hills to and from work. We do not have any showers at work, so I get pretty smelly in the warmer months. This year I decided to put an electric motor on this bike, to help me up the hills, and arrive at work not smelling like a gym. I can still ride the tri or road bike if I want to really sweat. I’ll do a blog post on what my thoughts are on bikes, and show some pics of my install. I bought a kit from ebikekit.com . Here is the kit I ordered:
Stay tuned for some upcoming reviews over the next few weeks.
That’s it for now.
Enjoy your workout.
